The Purposes of Per
The Purposes of Per The Purposes of ââ¬Å"Perâ⬠The Purposes of ââ¬Å"Perâ⬠By Mark Nichol Per (from a Latin word meaning ââ¬Å"by,â⬠ââ¬Å"by means of,â⬠or ââ¬Å"throughâ⬠) is widely employed in English, but it or a phrase in which it appears isnââ¬â¢t necessarily the best option. Hereââ¬â¢s a guide to using (or not using) per. In popular usage, per is appropriate in relation to figures (ââ¬Å"65 miles per hour,â⬠ââ¬Å"24 points per game,â⬠ââ¬Å"three items per person,â⬠and so on). It can also, alone or preceded by as, mean ââ¬Å"according to,â⬠as in ââ¬Å"Per your instructions, I deposited the checkâ⬠and ââ¬Å"She complied as per the usual procedure.â⬠Per is also an adverb synonymous with apiece; though its use in this form may seem like dialect in which the final word of the sentence is dropped (ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ll let you have them for five dollars perâ⬠), itââ¬â¢s standard usage. In its most common function, however, it is sometimes easily replaced by a, as in ââ¬Å"The position pays $75,000 a yearâ⬠rather than ââ¬Å"per yearâ⬠or ââ¬Å"I exercise three times a weekâ⬠rather than ââ¬Å"per week.â⬠Per as part of a set phrase taken directly from Latin is usually pedantic in popular usage; see the list below for recommendations about the use of such phrases: Per annum: This is an unnecessary substitution for the perfectly useful phrases ââ¬Å"a year,â⬠ââ¬Å"each year,â⬠or even ââ¬Å"per year.â⬠Per capita: This direct borrowing of the Latin phrase meaning ââ¬Å"by the headâ⬠is commonly employed in financial and demographic contexts, but ââ¬Å"per personâ⬠is better in general. Per centum: The Latin precursor of the semiabbreviation percent more clearly signals the original meaning (ââ¬Å"for each hundredâ⬠) but is obsolete. Per contra: This phrase, meaning ââ¬Å"in contrast to,â⬠is best reserved for legal contexts and only technical ones, at that. Per diem: The translations for this phrase are ââ¬Å"by the dayâ⬠or ââ¬Å"for the day,â⬠and except in reference to a daily stipend, thereââ¬â¢s no reason not to use daily (especially as an adjective). Per mill: In this phrase, mill is from the Latin term mille, meaning ââ¬Å"a thousand,â⬠so the term is akin to percent but spelled as two words. Itââ¬â¢s appropriate only in technical usage, however. Per se: Outside of legal usage, this term sometimes misspelled ââ¬Å"per sayâ⬠by those who mistakenly assume that it refers to the act of speaking means ââ¬Å"in itself,â⬠as in ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t object to the idea per se.â⬠(Note that, unlike as is the case when the English form is used ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t object to the idea, in itselfâ⬠no punctuation frames the term.) Coach Working at Different Levels within the UK Essay
Coach Working at Different Levels within the UK - Essay Example This paper illustrates that sports coaching has followed the trajectory of sports in the international market. Some coaches such as Alex Fergusson are as famous as the players whom they coach. This section discusses the functions and roles of coaches and helps in developing an understanding of their use. Sportsââ¬â¢ coaching is linked to the economic and social events of the past and coaching follows the story of sports. Modern sports such as football, cricket, and others were not invented in the ancient times and the common people had neither the energy nor the inclination to take up sports after a hard days labor. The ancient Greeks conducted the Olympics and the first mention of athletes who trained under special trainers is known. Plato, Archimedes, Hippocrates and other philosophers also served as coaches for they believed in a sound body and a sound mind. Wealthy patrons brought in expert wrestlers and runners, winners of Olympic events became celebrities, and wealth was sho wered on the winner and his coach. Imperial Rome had trainers who trained slaves for gladiator contests and training was limited to war games such as wrestling, sword fighting, archery, Javelin, horse riding, running and other such events. Kings and Lords maintained armies and these were kept in fighting shape through constant training. Coaches toured villages and picked up fit and strong youths and these were trained as soldiers. Contests of strength and skills were held during community feasts and trained soldiers participated in these events. The common peasant or tradesmen never participated in these contests or sports and coaching was limited to only events that helped in war.

Economic & Monetary Policy Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Economic & Monetary Policy - Essay Example Steel prices have been found to have fallen of a cliff, an indication of weakening demand generally. Chinaââ¬â¢s response had been to try and prop up the economy by a host of measures, including reducing reserve requirements for banks and cutting interest rates in 2014, all moves that no doubt are meant to encourage lending and to spur growth by providing liquidity to the market (Wildau, 2015; Roach, 2014). At the same time, the government has moved to tweak the asset holdings levels of banks in order to allow for banks to shore up its own lending portfolio and allow property developers, ordinary consumers, and a host of government corporations to avail of liquidity to finance purchases and investments, as well as loan repayments. The problem being foreseen is that as the liquidity levels grow, so do pressures on the interest rates downward, and so do the pressures on the currency to devalue, as more liquidity translates to a cheaper currency due to its greater availability. There re concerns that such moves may not work s China intended, because from experience past moves to inject liquidity resulted in the use of such new money to finance activities related to speculating on property and taking bets on the stock market, rather than for the purposes of expanding production and investing in real capital expenditure projects that drive growth in the long term (Deng et al., 2014; The Economist Newspaper Limited, 2014). The opinion from the market is that China should do more to shore up the economy by ensuring a fundamental shift away from a reliance on loans to finance growth, and a reliance on exports, towards making domestic consumption a bigger driver of growth (Reuters, 2015; Bradsher, 2015; Fernald et al., 2014). In Japan the conditions are different from Chinaââ¬â¢s in terms of the problems of the economy and the monetary policies that have been instituted

Using Computers as Effective Teaching Tools :: Technology Education Educational Papers
Using Computers as Effective Teaching Tools How can I implement technology to improve my effectiveness as a teacher? I know that students, in general, enjoy using computers in the classroom. So how can we, as teachers, take advantage of the computer as a tool to instruct? Computers are used as teaching tools often to teach through the interactive mode. Students enjoy interactive learning because they can apply the learning to the real world. I know that computers have their pitfalls in the classroom. How do I avoid these? I realize that my students will enter with various levels of knowledge and experience for computers. This can be a great challenge for instructors to incorporate into their daily lesson plans. I assume computer based learning is highly effective and should improve test scores. I assume students are more likely to be motivate with computer designed instruction. Students have the opportunity to be creative with computer-assisted learning. I assume the computer has some downfalls to the critical thinking exercises necessary for Science courses. I also assume that computers can hinder critical thinking processes--something mentioned by Todd Oppenheimerââ¬â¢s article, ââ¬Å"The Computer Delusion.â⬠Are there methods to avoid these hindrances? I imagine that there are more effective approaches to using computers as interactive learning tools. How do I get this information? I imagine the Internet has various resources for integrating computer based instruction into the classroom. As a Health Science teacher, I set high standards in the process of challenging my students. Critical thinking by inductive and deductive reasoning, analyzing, synthesizing, and applying information to realia--or real world context--is crucial in preparing students for college and beyond. I imagine that computers can enable my students to display these forms of learning through the utilization of computer based interactive curriculum. The Search Prior to my search, I was curious to why computers were not as effective as the general public assumed, as Oppenheimer had concluded. Dr. Herr, a professor of Education at California State Univerisity, Northridge, and my Methods of Teaching Science instructor, provides his seminars with ample uses for computers in education. This gave me the desire to further pursue the value of computers in the classroom on a larger scale; incorporating views and opinions nationwide. My search for answers came from Internet resources. Using the Google search engine, I decided to inquire information expounding on Oppenheimerââ¬â¢s article, ââ¬Å"The Digital Rights War.â⬠The topic of this article centered on the pros and cons of computers in the classroom.

Kimpton Hotels Earthcare Program Essay
What are the benefits of Kimptonââ¬â¢s environmental sustainability initiatives? What are its costs? The benefit of the program is to put back into the earth what is being taken out. Many companies who support Eco friendly establishments will book specifically with the Kimpton hotel in support of their EarthCare program. The costs are greater for not putting back into the environment what is taken out. In the long run being non eco friendly will cost Kimpton hotels more than what they spend on the initiative. How would you justify the EarthCare program to Kimptonââ¬â¢s board of directors and stockholders? That is, what is the business case for the program? The business case for the stockholders would be increased bookings from corporations and individuals that support the EarthCare program. By Kimpton hotels implementing an aggressive eco friendly plan, their hotels will stand out from the rest and be well known for their commitment to put back into the earth what they take. What challenges face the EarthCare program, and how might Kimpton overcome them? A couple of challenges that they face is the increased cost for some of the raw materials, such as sheets. A way to overcome that is to have aggressive buyers that work diligently to get the cost down by bulk buying for all of the hotels and then distributing from one central hub. The second challenge would be the employeeââ¬â¢s acceptance to the program. This can be overcome simply by getting all employeeââ¬â¢s involved in the initiative and keeping the line of communication open so that every stays informed and feels part of the decision process. What further steps should Kimpton take to institutionalize its environmental commitments? Kimpton should show their commitment by becoming ISO 14000 certified. This would show their commitment to customers, investors, shareholders and stakeholders.
